Dr. Nichole Sterling is a Partner in the New York City office of BakerHostetler where she is a member of the Digital Assets and Data Management Practice Group. She advises on a wide range of legal questions related to information and data, collaborating with clients across industry sectors to develop practical, global compliance solutions to complex data management challenges, from navigating the dynamic international privacy and data protection landscape to managing everyday data use. Nichole’s practice spans privacy and data protection, information governance, and emerging technologies, with a focus on assisting companies subject to multiple privacy and data protection laws. She regularly counsels clients on domestic and cross-border regulatory and compliance matters, including international data security incident response, advertising technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and data transfer, sharing, and localization requirements. Nichole also advises on electronic discovery issues, particularly as they intersect with privacy and data protection concerns.
A certified privacy professional (CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, and FIP), Nichole is a frequent speaker and writer. She has been recognized for her work in Cyber Law by the Legal 500 United States. Nichole is active with local, state, and federal bar associations and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) where she recently completed a two-year term on their Publications Advisory Board. She currently serves as a steering committee member for The Sedona Conference Working Group 6 and is active in Working Group 11.
Nichole received her B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College, J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her education included research and studies at universities in England, Denmark, Iceland, Scotland, and Sweden. Prior to attending law school, Nichole taught English, history, and writing at the university level. Following law school, Nichole was a Dean Acheson Legal Stagiaire for Judge Thomas von Danwitz at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
